Crossing the Chasm of Semantic Despair: Integrating Knowledge and Data from Science and Clinical Practice

Christopher G. Chute, Dr. Ph, MD, MPH

The biomedical basic science and clinical practice communities have long invoked differing data structures, semantics, and ontologies to render data and results. In most cases, this is appropriate and understandable, though it does pose some barriers to translation research in particular. The NCATS Translator program is a pilot effort to explore pathways (literally and figuratively) enhancing data integration. Many of the same members are also participating in the CTSA Program Data to Health (CD2), seeking to establish synergies and sharing of informatics tooling and biomedical data between and among CTSA hubs. This talk will provide an overview both of these programs, outlining goals, strategies, possibilities, and aspirations moving forward.  None of us presume to understand all that will be needed, though we do hope to engage CTSA hubs, academic medical centers, and CR Forum IT Roundtable members in the journey.

Dr. Chute is one of the leaders of the CD2H project. He is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Health Informatics, Professor of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing at Johns Hopkins University, and Chief Research Information Officer for Johns Hopkins Medicine.  See his bio here.
