RE: House Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Military Construction-Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill
On Wednesday, June 15th, the House Appropriations Committee approved its FY 2018 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (MilCon-VA) Appropriations bill by voice vote. The bill funds veterans’ benefits, health care and medical research programs.
In total, this legislation provides $192.8 billion in funding, an increase of $7.4 billion over the FY 2017 enacted level. Included in this total is $103.9 billion in mandatory funding and $88.8 billion in discretionary funding. The bill also provides $74 billion for the Veterans Health Administration, an increase of $5.6 billion over FY 2017.
The MilCon-VA bill is one of the more popular appropriations bills and the House is expected to pass the bill quickly. Congress has set the goal of passing all 12 appropriations bills for FY 2018 before the August recess.
Of specific interest to CCTS, the bill and its accompanying Committee Report (attached) include the following:
•$45.9 billion for VA Medical Services, an increase of $362.5 million over FY2017.
•$698 million for the VA Medical and Prosthetic Research Program, an increase of $22.8 million over FY 2017.
We will continue to keep you informed as this process moves forward.
