M.D., Ph.D., MBA E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., is Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Maryland and Dean, School of Medicine. Dr. Reece is a native of Jamaica, West Indies. He received his B.S. degree with Honors (Magna Cum Laude) from Long Island University and his M.D. degree from New York University School of Medicine; his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from the University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica; and his MBA degree from the Fox School of Business & Management, Temple University. He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, and a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. He was on the faculty at Yale University School of Medicine from 1982 until 1991. From 1991 to 2001, Dr. Reece served as the Abraham Roth Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at Temple University School of Medicine. In that department, he also directed the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. In addition to his administrative role at Temple, Dr. Reece maintained an active basic and translational research program, and clinical practice. Between 2001 and 2006, he served as Vice Chancellor and Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas. His research focuses on diabetes in pregnancy, birth defects, and prenatal diagnosis. He studied the mechanisms of diabetes-induced birth defects for many years, has made critical discoveries into the biology of this problem, and has advanced the leading biologic mechanisms for the causation of diabetes-associated birth defects. He has also demonstrated experimental methods for induction, prevention and treatment of these anomalies. Dr. Reece has obtained many extramural research grants. He has edited four monographs; written or edited eleven books; and authored or co-authored 450 journal articles, chapters, and abstracts in the field of maternal-fetal medicine. He is a member of numerous scientific organizations, including the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He serves on many national scientific, governmental and civic boards and committees.
